Azure File Storage Integration and Document Synchronization

Azure File Storage is a cloud storage solution from Microsoft that allows to create file shares in the Azure cloud to be mounted as file system on Windows servers or clients via SMB. It can be integrated and synchronized with traditional local or NAS-based file shares, e.g. department shares or user home drives, via the Layer2 Cloud Connector. The Cloud Connector can be also used to keep 100+ more widely used local and cloud-based IT-systems like SQL/ERP/CRM in sync codelessly.

To connect to Azure File Storage the data source entity must be configured as follows in the Layer2 Cloud Connector Connection Manager:

Azure File Storage Specific Configuration Settings

Please note the following specific settings.

  • You first need to mount the Azure File Storage drive to your host machine. Please see this guide here for how to do this.
  • Select the Layer 2 Data Provider for File System to connect. The provider is part of the Layer2 Cloud Connector distribution and should be already installed, depending on installation options selected. You can also install separately if required.
  • You can use a connection string like this to connect:
    Directory=\\AzureCloudDriveURL\;User=MyUser;Authentication=basic; password=MyCloudDriveAccessKey;
  • You can map your data source fields to specific destination fields in the Layer2 Cloud Connector. Please take care about data types (simple type conversions are supported). You can also make use of auto-mapping.
  • No installation or changes are required at the data source or data destination.
  • You do not need to manually enter a primary key.
  • You can use the connection for uni-directional synchronization (e.g. migration, backup) or bi-directional synchronization. Several replication conflict solution strategies are offered.
  • No need to open your local network for access from outside.
  • No programming required. No changes in the connected systems.
  • No 3rd party or vendor involved. The tool directly connects your Azure File Storage to your local shares.
