Fix: SharePoint bulk-tagging and real-time tagging does not work for PDF

The Layer2 Auto Tagger or Layer2 Tag Suggester can assign managed metadata automatically to SharePoint documents, including Adobe PDF, using IFilters. In some configurations there are issues with this. A step-by-step guide is given below to fix this issue.

If in SharePoint 2013 you are able to assign managed metadata automatically in background, e.g. as bulk-tagging or real-time tagging during document upload or change, to Office documents but not to Adobe PDF documents, this could be caused by any installation of Adobe PDF Reader (or any other reader) on the server. This installation is known to overwrite the DLL path for the Microsoft IFilter, that comes out-of-the-box starting with SharePoint 2013. Even uninstalling the reader cannot re-establish the broken functionallity.

You can fix the issue by re-entering the DLL path manually in the registry of the SharePoint server(s) as follows:

Use regit.exe to find the following key:

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSIF\{6C337B26-3E38-4F98-813B-FBA18BAB64F5}\InProcServer32 (Default)

The value should be:

Next find the following key:

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\PersistentHandler (Default)\

The value should be:

Please save and exit regedit and IISReset to make the changes available for SharePoint. Now PDF documents should be processed in the same way as any other documents that have IFilters installed, e.g. Office documents. If you still have issues, please verify that the PDF document contains your keywords as text characters, not graphic images. You should be able to copy / paste to Notepad in case it is text.
