Release Notes - Layer2 Cloud Connector
V12.0.7.0 (04/2026)

We are pleased to introduce a major update to the Layer2 Cloud Connector. Version 12 brings important improvements to authentication, security, and long-term platform compatibility.

This release focuses on modern authentication standards and prepares the product for future Microsoft platform requirements.

Here are the key highlights of this release:

Support for Microsoft Entra App Only Authentication

Version 12 adds support for Microsoft Entra App Only authentication.

This authentication method allows connections to Microsoft 365 services using an application identity and certificate instead of user based login.

It is especially useful for:

  • Background services without user interaction
  • Scenarios where credential storage should be avoided
  • Environments with stricter security requirements

The configuration is done via app registration in Microsoft Entra and requires appropriate API permissions and a certificate. Setup Details Available Here.

Existing Authentication Methods Remain Unchanged

The existing Microsoft Modern authentication remains the default and fully supported authentication method.

  • No changes to current configurations are required
  • Existing connections will continue to work as before
  • No migration is required

Minor Improvements

  • Improved handling of authentication configurations
  • Updated documentation for new authentication scenarios

Recommendation

Microsoft Entra App Only authentication can be used as an alternative for specific scenarios, especially for automated or service based integrations.

For standard use cases, Microsoft Modern authentication continues to be the recommended default.
